More Education Can Boost Your Big Data Career

A Big Data education is becoming increasingly available through universities.

Uses of Big Data continue to expand across a variety of industries and with that growing utility, the number of career opportunities continue to expand.

The Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), in a report released in late 2016, found that a vast majority of businesses have open positions in data analysis. They also reported actively recruiting people to take on these jobs.

The most noted departments that needed positions filled include finance, accounting, human resources and business administration.

That report is backed up by projections from the federal government. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the number of statistician jobs will increase 34% by 2024. They also report the median pay for such jobs in May 2016 was $80,500 per year.

How can you improve your chances of landing one of these jobs?

Education Is Key

As the number of jobs available grows in data analytics (often referred to as “business analytics”), the number of Big Data university degree and certificate programs in the field continue to grow, as well.

But is earning a data science certificate or degree necessary to land the best jobs in Big Data?

The answer, increasingly, is yes.

As with any industry, competition is expected to increase as the opportunities – and the salaries – increase. Big Data also is not pigeon-holed into one area. Properly done, data analytics can provide useful insights to organizations that range from traditional retailers and online stores to healthcare, scientific research and even sports teams.

A Big Data education can set candidates apart. Because while the skills to collect data has become important, the ability to carefully analyze that data proves much more important. As noted by Alistair Croll in his book, “Lean Analytics: Use Data to Build a Better Startup Faster,” the abundance of information is a given. Now, it’s knowing what data to pay attention to that Croll calls “a superpower.”

Analytics degree and certificate programs also offer the chance to combine data analytics with business skills. It’s not uncommon to see talented data people or talented business people, but those who can bridge the gap between the two are extraordinarily valuable.

What Big Data Certificates Have Value?

According to SHRM, businesses have difficulty finding people with the math and tech skills for the most prized data analytics jobs. These core skills give candidates the ability to drive successful data mining efforts, spot trends and reach conclusions that provide actionable insights for business leaders.

Plenty of degree programs offer a chance to improve your skills in these areas.

Microsoft, Cloudera, Oracle, IBM and SAS are among the tech giant companies that offer certification in various data science areas. They include “certified data scientist” (SAS), “certified solutions expert” (Microsoft) and “certified professional data scientist” (Cloudera). Each of these can improve your skills and make your resume stand out.

Big Data university programs also are on the rise. They include data analysis, data engineering and data science certifications and degrees.

They key in all of this is choosing a program that best elevates your skills and offers the latest in software innovation that is key for both collection and analysis of data.
